Case solved: From the grill to his own home Luis Alberto Galarza is originally from Tlaxcala, Mexico. He worked 60 hours daily at the Corte Café, an Italian restaurant on Lafayette Street in Manhattan, in which he did get paid a proper salary. Only 40 hours out of those 60 hours a week he would get paid for. For six years, explains Galarza, I worked making that kid of salary and I had no idea that my rights as a worker were being abused. I worked on the grill with a salary that barely came out to $600, an amount that is not enough to survive in the Big Apple.
He consulted with various lawyers and was told that his case had expired. All of which led him, thanks to the recommendation of two friends that had recently won their respective cases, to the office of the lawyer Michael Faillace & Associates. There they were able to find him a solution.
He is also thinking about investing in a business, which he reserves more for himself because he believes that speaking about it too much will lower the chances of it actually happening, to assure the future of his loved ones. He arrived 36 years ago to New York. His first job was at a 99 cents store organizing products on shelves. Now with the experience he’s gained the first thing he advises to his fellow countrymen is to save and save. Savings are the best resource that a person can have when facing an emergency or carving out a different future. “You have to try to save because you never what can happen along the way,” says the countryman. Galarza, finally, doesn’t shy away from what he’s learned from the judicial process that he had to go through. “Thanks to Mr. Faillace I know better the rights that we immigrant workers have. That has inspire me to speak to my coworkers and comrades to let them know they have rights. That if they work hard the will be rewarded what they deserve,” he concluded.
